growing older

May 19th, 2008

of course, it all depends on your perspective, but when you go to the doctor for a yearly physical, to be poked and prodded and you leave with a recommendation to take calcium supplements every day, one can’t help but feel a little older.

I found some powder that is supposed to be unflavored that I can mix in with my juice. That really makes me feel old. At least I don’t have to take fiber supplements, at least not yet.

I am now crossing my fingers that my cholesterol comes back low. I don’t know if I want to give up my current diet just quite yet, especially since I am looking forward to some Chik-fil-A this summer in Atlanta!

returning the favor

April 28th, 2008

I get the most referrals to my blog from Brett Nordquist’s blog.

If you read my blog, and haven’t yet clicked on the link on my sidebar to his, please do.

It’s worth the click.

Especially if you read THIS post.

“The unleashed power of the atom has changed everything save our modes of thinking and we thus drift toward unparalleled catastrophe.” –Albert Einstein

Sometimes I feel like this quote applies to my place of work. If we don’t change the way we think, we are headed for a major earth-shattering disaster…

I want to be someone who is willing to change my way of thinking.

Last year, because of my MA studies, I was a social networking queen. Every semi-popular social networking website I signed up for and monitored. After I “finished” school, I kinda have gotten sick of most of the social networking stuff, except for Twitter and Flickr.

Yesterday, I learned about FriendFeed. This is basically an RSS feed of all your friends’ various social networking/Web 2.0 activities. Brilliant. It’s a one stop shopping for Web 2.0. No longer do you have to log in to multiple sites to see what your friends are up to. I especially like how you can have your netflix queue and your amazon wishlist in your personal RSS friendfeed. You can keep your voyeurism limited to one webpage. I defintately think that this is where the net is headed… especially if apps for this are written for mobile devices.

I just want to know now what my friends are listening to on their iPods and watching on their TVs and buying on ebay at any given moment in time.

My FriendFeed is: http://friendfeed.com/joonitree

spring

March 24th, 2008

My favorite season is spring. The flowers begin blooming, the leaves come back on the trees and the grass is the greenest. In Seattle, we do get a lot of rain, but in the spring, whenever the sun comes out, everything just sparkles and seems brighter. I used to be a very depressed person and the winter months would just kill me. I would mope about for most of January and February, but when March would hit and everything started blooming, my whole countenance would change.

During Springtime, I get very antsy. When I was in college, I would skip more classes than any other time of the year. Something in me just ITCHES to get out and have an adventure. I want to leave town, go somewhere, experience the new. Now that I am not in school and don’t have a spring break, I will need to make a plan for an adventure.

Perhaps another kite flying expedition. Any suggestions of good Kite Flying places in the Puget Sound?

Backstage

Where I Sit

I have been spending a lot of time in a dark backstage area. My eyes have been opened to a whole new world. When we go to a Show, a Concert or a Conference, we walk in expecting to be entertained, WOW-ed or some other similar reaction, having NO CLUE all the work that goes into the whole show. The production crew takes an empty hall or ballroom and turns it into a stage with curtains, lights and powerful sound with breathtaking speed, sometimes overnight.

On the show circuit, everyone knows everyone, and in a way, its like a little family. It’s just a family whose house keeps getting put up then t down a few days later with a million hours of manpower  . It’s kind of like Extreme Home Makeover, but with a GroundHog Day twist.

Backstage has a certain protocol, language and culture. Those who operate within the culture are accepted, but if someone has no clue as to what goes on and is invited backstage they are usually called things like “Talent” or “The Executive” or “The Entertainment.” If someone like me is new and says things the wrong way, I found out quickly that I just get a blank stare like I am talking to them in Swahili or Japanese. It pays to find someone to help you navigate the lingo and etiquette.

I still have a lot to learn, but I think I am finally getting the hang of it. Honestly, it’s really been my favorite part of my job, even with all the stress and issues that come up with Show Business. It’s a crazy but cozy little world and I hope I get to stick around for a while…

Miracles

“For Glory means good report with God, acceptance by God, response, acknowledgement, and welcome into the heart of things. The door on which we have been knocking all our lives will open at last.”

–C.S. Lewis, The Weight of Glory

Seeing the door opening, after a long time of knocking, is almost unbelievable, but it it opening.
